GETTING HERE

RAIL

The UK has an excellent railway network including both an east coast and west coast main line rail service running from e.g. London to Edinburgh and Glasgow. The West Coast Main Line runs from London through Preston to Oxenholme. There is only one change, a connecting service from Oxenholme to Windermere, which is an easy transfer as the only local service is to Windermere, trains are approximately every 1/2 hour as this is a single gauge line. The time of the local service is synced with the main line trains and the typical journey times by train to Windermere is about 3.5 hrs from London.

Trains from Glasgow, Manchester and the Midlands come also into Oxenholme. From Newcastle you will need to change at Carlisle and then back into Oxenholme.

Typical journey times from these other destinations are as follows:

Midlands – about 2.5 hours

Manchester – about 2 hours

Newcastle – about 2.5 hours

Glasgow – about 1.5 hours

Once at Windermere station you can walk to us, the station is just outside Windermere or alternatively you can catch one of the taxis at the rank or you can ring Lakes Taxis yourself on:

015394 46777/44055

The Lakes Taxis office is located very close to the train station. Their website is www.lakestaxis.co.uk, or believe it or not they have a facebook page too.  Journeys can be made for up to 8 passengers, so if a number of you are arriving with a large amount of luggage this might be easier than walking.

CAR

The UK’s network of motorways, and other major roads means that Cumbria can be easily reached by car. The M6 motorway (from London to Glasgow) travels north through the centre of Cumbria – with junction 36 before Kendal being the easiest to direct from.

From Manchester, Midlands and London

Find your way from your starting destination onto the M6 motorway heading North. Then take exit 36 on the M6 onto to the A591, carry straight on this road it bypasses Kendal to the west, continue north past the town and cross the large “Plumgarths roundabout “, taking the second exit (straight on) and follow the signs for Windermere.  After the "Welcome to Windermere" sign take a left off the A591 at the Windermere Hotel which will take you into the one way system of Windermere, take a left into Birch Street which is just after the post office and you will find us in the corner on the right.
